‘Alpha’ Reviews: From The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Rolling-Stone, and more

The reviews are in! Various film critics and review sites have weighed in on this summer’s most inspiring film – Alpha. Jeff Robinov’s Studio 8 teamed up with Columbia Pictures to bring you an emotional journey between a boy and a lone wolf — imagining how mankind discovered man’s best friend.

David Fear of Rolling Stone comments on how non-traditional, innovative, and groundbreaking the film is, saying: “But it is most certainly a tonic in an age when every blockbuster film feels like part of some endless multiverse-cum-marketing scheme. That fact that both a studio and someone as talented as Hughes were still willing to make something as out-of-step as this is, frankly, inspiring.”

Hughes, along with screenwriter Daniele Sebastian Wiedenhaupt, lead you on a family film about man’s best friend and the bond between him and his new-found friend, Keda, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee.

“This movie tells you, it’s not the journey itself but the furry, fangs-bearing friends you make along the way (and help you stay alive) that really matters” – David Fear, Rolling Stone

Julian Roman of Movie Web notes how director Albert Hughes beautifully crafted the story to show how dogs became domesticated. Roman adds the fact that many movies have tried to capture the story of the relationship between a boy and his dog but none like Alpha.

“A captivating, beautifully shot adventure for all ages” – Julian Roman, Movie Web

Keda, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, embarks on a coming-of-age journey with his father and tribal chief, played by Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, leading the way. The film touches on family and parenting by developing the story around the relationship Keda has with his family and tribe. After being fully invested in Keda’s wellbeing and journey into adulthood, you are led on his gritty excursion into the wilderness alone, tired, hungry, and with an urge to find his way.

“Alpha could quite possibly be the biggest surprise of the summer.” – Scott Menzel, We Live Entertainment

Alpha hits theaters this Friday, August 17th, 2018
